Visitors

A hallmark of LBD is hallucinations, or visions. We call them Visitors. They are benign, and often, Mr. Dewey finds them comforting. This is not uncommon, and it is most welcome. Anything that provides comfort is welcome, especially in month 8 of the pandemic lockdown, the self-isolation, the management of the “pods” that such entails.

They come at night, so far. And even in the darkness they are vivid and real to him. He has described three of them to me, so far. The first was what Dewey said was the “most beautiful man I have ever seen.” I asked hi if it looked like an angel, and he said it didn’t. Just a beautiful man. That’s all he could tell me. Another was a bear. It pawed quietly around the room, snuffled about, but wasn’t a nuisance or frightening. Dewey reached out for it, but his had passed through, vivid though it was.

The third was a cowboy, in full western costume, like the old Roy Rogers movies. He just sat down on the chair in the corner and visited. I asked what they talked about. Dewey said they didn’t speak. It was telepathic, and not about anything in particular, just comforting. That works.

I’ve read that people with LBD often see children and animals milling about them, playing quietly, ignoring but not indifferent to the person watching them. Dewey is fascinated by these Visitors. That makes me happy.

I am Snad. It has been my nickname since I was about 8 years old. I've had dozens of jobs in my life, but the one I have now is caretaker for my husband, who has Lewy Body Dementia with Atypical Parkinsonism. It sucks. It isn't fair. But that's life. We are walking the road together, stumbling along, hand in hand.
